When
I was translating manga for Viz back in the early 90s, I suggested that, since
most shôjo manga are designed to appeal to mainstream readers, it might be
better to forgo the "comic book" format, and instead try to get paperback
editions onto the "youth novel" and "romance" shelves in
major chain bookstores. Viz told me we could never hope to even get a foot in
the door of the big chains. Well, today you can go into any major bookstore
in the U.S. and find paperback editions of shôjo manga in English. It's amazing
and exciting how the market has opened up, but I think we have seen only the
first trickle of a real flood of translated shôjo manga. I'm proud that my
own shôjo manga translations were among the very first drops of this trickle.
Here are some of my own and others' translations of shôjo manga, as well as some of my non-shôjo-manga translations and various recommended books: mostly manga, comics, and books related to comics. I've only listed books that are currently in print and are now (or soon will be) available from Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.
To purchase a book, or just look at the entry for a book, click on one of the
logos to the right of the book entry. (If you are using a non-graphical browser,
such as Lynx, this link may actually appear to the left of the entry.) DON'T
WORRY! Just clicking on the link will not commit you to buying anything.
You will just be shown ordering information for that item. Even if you don't
want to buy anything, click on the links to find out more information about
the books and read reviews by readers. To come back to this page, use your browser's
"BACK" command.
